The Basics: Painting with Heat for Instant Colour

At its core, the artistic approach to sublimation is surprisingly simple and incredibly fun. You don’t need a fancy digital printer or complex setup. Instead, you paint directly onto paper using liquid sublimation inks, wait for your creation to dry, and then transfer your unique design onto your fabric using just heat – like a standard household iron or a craft heat press.

The magic happens when the heat turns the dried ink into a gas, which permanently bonds with the synthetic fibers. The result? Completely wash-fast, vibrant colours that don’t change the drape or feel of the fabric. It’s like magic!

Choosing Your Canvas for Best Results

For the colours to truly pop with maximum vibrancy, you’ll need fabrics that are light in colour and made of at least 70% polyester. Flat weaves with no texture often work best for crisp transfers, but experimentation is key as the dyes react differently to every material!

Some beautiful fabrics to try for your projects include:

  • Twill and Gabardine (great for structured pieces or robust upcycling)
  • Voile and Organza (perfect for sheer, ethereal textile collages)
  • Faux Suede (absorbs colour beautifully for a soft, rich effect)

Love working with natural fibers? You can absolutely use cotton, but it requires a little prep work. You’ll need to treat the fabric first with a special sublimation coating spray. This step introduces another layer of experimentation to discover how the colours react!

Mark-Making and Painting: Your Creative Playground

Forget the computer screen; this is about getting your hands dirty and expressing yourself! You can apply the inks to your paper using anything you like. Try traditional paintbrushes, sponges, cotton buds, or even kebab sticks to scratch in textures and lines.
Just like watercolours, you can play with different dilutions of ink to obtain beautiful, soft gradations of colour. The possibilities for mark-making are endless, but remember: the more you experiment, the better you’ll understand how the inks behave!

The Simple Transfer Process (and important tips!)

Once your painted paper is completely dry, place it face-down onto your fabric. Apply heat (around 180-200°C) for up to a minute.

You can definitely do this at home with a standard household iron! However, if you truly fall in love with this technique and want more consistent, repeatable results, I highly recommend investing in a craft heat press like the one I use: a great, affordable machine that is portable and easy to store. I prefer to use a heat press in the studio because it offers precise temperature control and even pressure, making it much easier to repeat your successes.

A crucial tip for protecting your tools: To keep your iron or heat press pristine, always use Teflon sheets between your heat source and your project. These reusable, washable sheets are a lifesaver for protecting your equipment from any stray ink!

Once pressed, peel back the paper. No washing, steaming, or further fixing is needed! You can even go back in and build up rich layers of overlapping colour for stunning effects.

Gathering Your Colours

Sublimation (or disperse) dyes can be bought as powders that you dissolve in water, or conveniently ready-mixed liquids. If you want to dive right in, you can buy excellent ready-mixed liquid dyes here.

Just like acrylics or watercolours, these dyes can be mixed to form endless new shades. To start, you really only need a basic set of the three primary colours (red, yellow, blue) plus black.

An exciting alternative for flat colours and backgrounds: For graphic effects, backgrounds, or to expand your colour palette affordably, try sublimation transfer ink sheets. These come in a wide variety of colours and are fantastic for building layers in textile collages.
