But no Helsinki trip is complete without some retail therapy — especially if you’re into sustainable fashion and vintage finds. In this guide, I’ll take you through Helsinki’s best vintage and second-hand shops, from eco-friendly charity stores to high-end boutiques, so you can shop responsibly and discover one-of-a-kind treasures.

Helsinki’s ‘Pre-loved’ and Vintage Shops: Where the Magic Happens

These shops are everywhere, but I’m giving you the lowdown on the best ones (in my totally biased opinion, of course). First things first: I adore Finnish design company Marimekko. Of course, I beelined straight to one of their shops upon arrival. I knew the brand was pricey, but I was not prepared for how pricey. Like, 26 euros for made-in-China socks pricey. And shirts and cardigans (also made in China) starting at 250 euros! So, the next best option was hunting down previous seasons’ Marimekko items in second-hand shops.

A word of warning: the sheer volume of clobber in these shops can be overwhelming, so a focused approach is key. I stick to a limited colour palette and was mainly interested in Finnish/Scandi brands, so I didn’t even glance at anything else. There were tons of clothes from Zara, H&M, Mango, and M&S, but since I don’t wear those brands normally, I didn’t give them a second thought. Plus, travelling with just hand luggage helps you stay focused! Fun fact: all the shops seem to have a wide selection of very stylish dresses for larger women, and not just from specialized brands.

UFF: Your Guilt-Free Shopping Spree

My absolute favourite! UFF is a Finnish non-profit that focuses on climate action and global development work. So, you can feel good about your purchases!
There are a ton of branches around the city. Some are “second hand”, focusing on contemporary everyday clothes, while others are “vintage,” specializing in curated clothes from the 1960s to early 2000s. I especially loved the Boulevardi and Hakaniemi vintage shops, but it’s worth checking out every branch you pass because they all have different stock. They have dedicated Finnish design racks and some even carry gorgeous vintage textiles and woolens.

Fida: Charity Shop Treasures

This is another one you can feel good about. These shops are part of a charity that works to improve the lives of children and youth globally. They’re probably the most similar to British high-street charity shops.

I visited three of their six branches in Helsinki and amongst their very random selection of clothing there were some amazing bargains to be had. They also sell furniture, home accessories, and trinkets. The Roobertinkatu branch had some beautiful glass pieces – sadly impractical for my small suitcase.

Moody Monday: Mall Mania

These are boutiques inside shopping malls, and it’s not until you go inside that you realise you’re in a pre-loved fashon store. One is conveniently located in Kamppi at the heart of the city while the other is in the Mall of Tripla, a bit further out. Prices were lower in Tripla, where I snagged a fabulous Marimekko top with huge red and blue flowers top for 60 euros.

Relove: Second-Hand Chic with a Side of Coffee

This is such a brilliant concept! Second-hand fashion combined with a café. They have six branches featuring luxury brands, premium labels, and distinctive Finnish design on designated racks. I scored a black-and-white abstract Marimekko dress in perfect condition from the Töölö branch.

Play it Again, Sam: Vintage Heaven

This is a truly unique, high-end vintage shop. They have tons of unique clothing and accessories from the 1890s to 1970s, with prices to match. It’s one of the oldest vintage shops in Helsinki, opened in 1987 by the very stylish Arja Könönen, who still runs it.

It’s worth a visit even if you can’t afford the prices, as it’s a real treasure trove for anyone who loves fashion from past decades.

      • Play it again, Sam, Rauhankatu 2, 00170 Helsinki
      • Opening hours: Monday – Friday 12 noon – 6 pm, Saturday 12 noon – 3 pm

Ritva’s Antik: Junk-Meets-Antique Paradise

Last but not least, something completely different: a junk-meets-antique shop piled to the rafters with stuff. In other words, my favourite kind of place! Even better news, all prices are negotiable. There’s so much in there I cannot even begin to describe the stoock but hopefully the two images give you a rough idea. I bought a miniature wind-up toy: a little boy that drinks beer from a mug, made in Germany 100 years ago, presumably at a time when you didn’t need to prove your age in order to drink alcohol. You can see it in action on my Instagram feed.

  • Ritva’s Antik, Pieni Roobertinkatu 5, 00130 Helsinki
  • Opening hours: Tuesday – Friday 12 noon – 6 pm, Saturday 12 noon – 4 pm
